Bella jumped off a cliff.
Alice saw her.
Jacob saved her.
Alice didn’t see that.
We all know the story. Alice and Bella race to Volterra to stop Edward from revealing himself to the people in the square. She reaches him just in time, throwing herself at him in order to prevent him from going through with it. He inhales deeply, mutters something about heaven, and she, stuttering and shaking, pulls back from him enough to push him into the shadows.
“I needed you to see me once. You had to know that I was alive. You don’t need to feel guilty about it. I can let you go now.”
This is where things change. Edward does the noble thing. He lets her go, as he always intended to. He lets her go back to Forks to live a normal, human life. He doesn’t tell her that he was lying.
Unfortunately, a young girl had been watching from the shadows. She’d seen everything, and, to Aro, that was crime enough. Edward was brought back to the castle and deemed guilty of breaking the vampires’ one law. He had been planning to expose their kind to the humans. He is sentenced to death, but Aro gives him a little leeway. He may keep his life –whatever life this is- if he agrees to remain with the Volturi’s guard. Edward, of course, refuses outright, claiming that he cannot be condemned for a crime he never actually committed in the first place. Aro agrees, but wonders why Edward hadn’t gone through with it. He uses his gift in order to find out, and finds that Bella Swan is very much alive.
And that’s just the card he needs to play to keep Edward in Volterra. Aro agrees to let Bella remain blissfully human and alive so long as he remains with their guard. What choice does Edward have but to agree?
Meanwhile, Bella has returned to Forks and is doing just as Edward asked. She is living a normal life –or as normal a life as one can have when in such close contact with werewolves. Slowly, she is beginning to move on. She’s letting Edward go, and she’s letting Jacob in. For Bella, things seem to be getting back to normal.
But all good things must come to an end. Several months later, things have gone back to the normal, Cullen-less state. The scent of vampire is upon La Push lands again. It’s familiar, but no one can pinpoint it. When the pack corners the vampire, they are met with a crimson-eyed Edward Cullen. He tells them that he means no harm and that he has to warn them of something. The Volturi are coming to Forks, but not for reasons one might think. Edward has gone along with Aro’s orders, and so Bella is the least of their concern. But Caius has gotten word from a travelling nomad that a pack of werewolves, the La Push Pack had taken down one of their own. Caius, already having had a terrible past experience with werewolves, seeks to exterminate them. The guard is coming to assess the situation.
There are two ways this can go. The wolves can agree to their own execution or they can fight. Why wouldn’t they fight? Aro has given them an ultimatum. Either the La Push wolves give themselves up, or the Volturi will go after their loved ones. They do not have the same treaty restricting them as the Cullens do.
What will the pack do? Will the Cullens return to honor their alliance with the wolves, or are they left to fend for themselves? And, now that Edward and Jacob are both back in Forks, what will come of Bella?
There’s one thing for certain. This is a forbidden destiny
